Death of Quentin Dale Plumleigh of Old Lyme Announced

Quintin Dale Plumleigh

OLD LYME — Quentin Dale Plumleigh, pilot, United States veteran retiree and beloved family man left this earth for a better place in early May.

He was known as Dale to his family and friends, and all knew him as congenial, smiling and open to everyone, especially those who were drawn to his personal experiences as a pilot for over seven decades. He began his aviation career in the Midwest after World War II when airplanes became necessities for farmers surveying their crops and cattle. Over the course of his career as pilot and instructor, he logged hours in every make of Cessna airplane, including the Cessna Citation models I, V, VII and the Citation X, which flew at just under Mach I. He accrued many thousands of hours in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict, the Vietnam War, and Strategic Air Command (SAC), specifically captaining the B-52.

He is mourned by his loving wife Maureen of Old Lyme, her sister and brother, her daughter and her family; his children Deborah, Gerald, Robert, Teresa and Charles, their children and grandchildren who all reside in Texas, aviation students and fellow pilots, friends, neighbors and caregivers.

He now embodies the poem High Flight by John Gillespie Magee:

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, – and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of – wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air…

Up, up the long, delirious burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or ever eagle flew –
And, while with silent, lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

Plans for a memorial are postponed because of the current health crisis.

Death of Christopher Duval Announced

Christopher Duval

On Saturday, May 23, 2020, Christopher Duval passed away peacefully at the age of 67.

He leaves behind his beloved wife, Constance McCabe, as well as his parents, Irma and Harry Duval of Old Lyme, his brothers Matthew and Mark, his sister Susan, and his nephews and niece, Michael, Gregory, and Sarah.

Chris was born in 1953 in New Hampshire, and spent most of his life in New England. Chris met Connie in Portland, Maine in 1987. In 1988 they opened their advertising agency, McCabe & Duval, which they ran until they retired in 2019. Chris and Connie recently moved from their home in Harpswell, Maine to Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Chris had a zest for life and dynamic energy that led to many friendships. There will be very few people that don’t have at least one funny or interesting story to tell about Chris!

Chris was rightly proud of the success of McCabe & Duval, and thoroughly enjoyed working with the agency’s staff, clients, and partners through the years. However, his most far-reaching achievement was leading a grassroots effort, in 2003-2004, to defeat fuel giant ConocoPhillips. He joined with Harpswell neighbors and fishermen to block the building of an LNG (liquefied natural gas) plant that would have had a disastrous impact on the coastal environment and fishing/lobstering industry of Harpswell.

Chris had a passion for the outdoors. He loved hiking and camping, and there was no ski trail too steep or too icy for him to run. Maine summers would find Chris out boating with Connie, enjoying the waters, islands, and peninsulas of Casco Bay.

The world is a smaller place without Chris. He will be very much missed by his family and friends, and by Daisy the golden retriever and Blu, the Australian cattle dog who thinks the sun rises and sets on Chris.

Chris, may you find double black diamond trails, a following sea, and glorious mountain peaks on the other side. You are loved.

Helen Tappan Hine

OLD LYME – Helen Tappan Hine, 99, of Old Lyme, passed away from COVID-19 Thursday, May 21, 2020, at Bride Brook Health & Rehabilitation Center, Niantic. Helen was born Feb. 24, 1921, in Baltimore, Md. to Benjamin and Elise (Gail) Tappan. She graduated from Oberlin College in 1943, with a Bachelor of Arts in fine art, and earned her RN from Johns Hopkins School of Nursing in 1946.

Helen was an exchange student in Switzerland in 1939, and was in Paris when France went to war. She planned to use her nursing degree to return and help rebuild Europe, but, in the spring of 1947, she met a dashing naval aviator, Thomas Hine. They were married that December and spent 53 years together, until Tom’s death in 2010. Along the way, they raised three children; and she worked as a nurse, including ten years at Connecticut Hospice, when it was new. She loved nature, especially flowers, knitted enough sweaters to circle the earth, and had an irrepressible sense of humor.

Helen is survived by her daughters, Pamela Hine, of Old Lyme and Nancy Hine Juliano (spouse Frank) of Morganton, N.C. Helen, Tom and Pam shared a home for many years and she was a vital and much loved part of her grandsons, Alexander and Peter T. Hine’s lives. Helen’s son, Peter L. Hine, predeceased her, but she will be missed by his widow, Candis Hine, and their children, Thomas Hine, Katherine Hine Smith (spouse Corey) and Theodore Hine (spouse Gwyneth); as well as her great-grandchildren: Kate’s Madeline and Ian Smith and Ted’s Luther, Calliope and Vivian Hine.

A celebration of Helen’s life is being planned for after the pandemic, when all the many people whose lives she touched can gather and throw a party as joyful as the legacy she leaves us all.
